Tips for Writing Issues/ Essays (Task II)

1. Read news papers, news magazines regularly to gather matter on Socio-economic issues.
2. Practice writing essays at home
3. Read the question carefully. Read the tag in the question: Discuss, Describe, Illustrate, Explain……
4. Know that the tag determines the direction of the essay.
5. Discuss means making a critical analysis; Describe: Give an account of something; Illustrate: Explain with example and Explain: Give reasons for. Note: Both Academic Module and General Module have Essay/Issue writing.

You need to write an essay in 250 words within 40 minutes. Your essay should contain three parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion.

Introduction

You need to write a paragraph in the introduction part. In this you need to give a description of the main idea of the given question. For example, in the first essay given above the main idea is ‘Capital Punishment’. So, you need to write: what capital punishment is and where and why it is executed.

Body

In the body of the essay, you need to write what the question expects you to highlight. You should find the keywords from the question to answer appropriately. For example, in the first essay given above keywords would be: Believe, ought to enforce, alternative forms, better used…..

You need to justify your stand: Why you oppose Capital Punishment and What alternative forms can be better used. You may present your ideas in two or three short paragraphs.

Conclusion

Finally, you need to conclude your essay. Don’t write any new points in conclusion; rather, just give the summary of introduction and the body of your essay.
